Who is the course for? The course is suitable for complete beginners, those with a little experience, or those who have tried Italic in the past but who are rusty and wish to improve. The course runs for ten weeks (two hours per week) and will cover the Italic script, written with a broad-edged dip pen, plus associated capital letters.
When and where will it take place? The course will run on Tuesday afternoons from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm, from Tuesday 24 September 2019 to Tuesday 3 December 2019 (no meeting on Tuesday 29 October) at Cocking Village Hall, Bell Lane, Cocking, nr Midhurst, GU29 0HU.
What will I learn? The course will introduce students to the Italic hand, plus related capital letters. During the course we will:
Study the characteristics of Formal Italic letter forms from historical and modern manuscripts and exemplars
Write Italic with good proportions, pen angle and spacing
Try out some Italic variations
Design and layout a piece of writing, then write a finished piece
Use Italic calligraphy to make some Christmas wrapping paper or a Christmas tree decoration.
How much does it cost? The course costs £85. Your place is not secured until payment has been received. There will be a small additional cost of around £5 for materials you can purchase from me at the first session (see below).
Refunds: a full refund will be given until after the first session has taken place (just in case you change your mind and decide the course is not for you). Thereafter no monies will be refunded.
What do I need to bring? A list of things to bring will be provided once you have booked your place. Don't buy any writing materials/paper until you have attended the first session!
